IN LOVING MEMORY
Sharon Redd
"Formerly Of The Harlettes"
With the blessings of Bette Midler, Sharon, Ula & Charlotte struck out on their own. They had proven to be quite popular as Bette's "Harlettes" & decided to try their luck as group in their own right. Their lone LP was titled "Sharon Redd, Ula Hedwig, Charlotte Crossley - Formerly Of The Harlettes", which was released near the end of 1977 on Columbia Records.
They released an additional single from this album, "Maiden Voyage"/"Does Your Mama Know About Me", which also received no chart action here in the states. How "Does Your Mama Know About Me" was not the A-Side is simply beyond me. It had everything that you could ask for in a ballad: great music, a great arrangement & most of all, a superlative vocal performance by Sharon. Perhaps its release during the height of the Disco explosion hurt its chart action. Regardless, this was arguably Sharon's greatest performance & it deserved a better fate than it ultimately received. Another of their early appearances as a trio, was at New York City's Bottom Line. They appeared there from June 30 to July 2nd of 1978. By all accounts, the girls were popular. Nevertheless, this was their last recording as a unit. Sharon continued to work in the background, lending her voice to the music of other artists. It was one of her uncredited performances, that led directly to her solo career.
